Dining Room Furniture A Feast For The Senses

Dining room furniture affords a wealth of decorating opportunity and choice but it can also run the risk of causing paralysis in the analysis with more and more alternatives available in the marketplace and the options ever increasing.

Is the dining room to be formal, functional or fun?

Is your dining room furniture to be contemporary, traditional or transitional?

Will the use of your dining room be strictly formal and only occasional, or will your furniture be subjected to the the rigors of every day use?

Finally, will the room's occupants predominantly be friends or will they be family?

And in the end, as with everything else in life, why can’t we just have it all? Dining room furniture that can serve as both formal and functional. And hold up to the glare and scrutiny of the most discerning but well meaning of friends. And just as equally hold up under the wear and tear of family feasts or daily dinner. And occasionally do double duty as a home office or homework setting. Need it only be one or the other?

The dining room is perhaps the one room in all of the house where the center of the room is the true focal point, set by the dining room table and the chairs surrounding it.

While an area rug can anchor the setting, making it more or less formal as desired, an intricate, detail designed rug is not ideal as the chairs and table take away from that decor feature. It is important that the dining room furniture not overwhelm the room by being too large, or become lost or subdued by being too small.

For dining room tables, a glass top provides the illusion of more space in the room. A table with hidden drawers afford additional, accessible space for table linens and the like.

Remaining dining room furniture should be based on the centerpieces and can be given a more formal feel with the addition of antique heritage pieces such as a china cabinet or a sideboard.

Simple accents such as platters, tureens or other like pieces can provide signature elements to personalize the space.

Before starting a collection of dining room furniture do the math and invest in additional. There is nothing worse than having to borrow from the neighbors. Particularly if they haven’t been invited.
